Welcome back everyone! We hope you had a wonderful winter break. We are looking forward to having lots of fun as we welcome 2012. We are still celebrating being a 4 star center. Thanks for the delicious lunch. It was so thoughtful of you to think of us in this special way.
We welcome Maiya to our class. We will miss Kaitlyn and Christopher. Alece Shumpert is a senior from Althoff Catholic High School. She will be doing her Senior Service project at Discovery. She will be a great help in the purple room for the first three weeks of January.
We need your help. The purple room class has been trying to go “green”! Please save items for our reuse/recycle center. The following are some ideas of what you might save for us.
empty paper rolls lids and caps small boxes microwave dinner containers
cardboard bubble wrap plastic bottles and jars
Be sure all items are clean before sending. We have the reuse area labeled. If you have any questions be sure to let us know.
During January we will be continuing our project on foods. We had fun tasting vegetables prepared different ways as we highlighted foods used in Stone Soup. The Little Red Hen story will kick off activities related to various kinds of breads. We hope to taste a variety of breads as well as make different kinds of bread. We will also highlight the changes of the season. BRRRRRR
The Lending Library is in the hallway for your use. Activities you borrow might help ease that cabin fever feeling that builds in January.
We plan to go outside if the wind chill is above 20 degrees. Please send your child with outerwear needed to keep warm on these cold days.
Friday January 13: Project Child will not be in session. Programming will be provided for children who are scheduled to attend for extended day; a.m only children will not meet.
Family Event: January 20 from 9:00-9:45ish. Join us for Stone Soup – Little Red Hen bread, stories, songs and much more. Please sign up so we know how much the children need to prepare. (Yes, it could be your breakfast!)
We hope you know that you are always welcome to join us in the Purple room. Just let us know a time that is convenient for you. You can stay for a short time or join us for the morning. We would love to have a parent support children’s learning as they do computer games.
Conscious Discipline
We will continue to implement components of Conscious Discipline into our everyday routine. During January we will focus on encouragement. Encouragement empowers children and adults alike. We will be your child’s cheerleader and encourage you to do the same at home. “Way to go!” “You did it!” “Good for you!” “I know you can handle this!” By using encouragement we hope to help children become aware of their accomplishments. Positive self esteem is enhanced when a child sees himself as successful and as a contributor to the family's well being.
Stay warm and thanks for all your support!
Maria, Megan, and Heather
